Ramblings on Collegium that make sense to me

  • Oct. 30th, 2009 at 11:45 AM

(But maybe no one else)

Frankly the number of people who attend this Collegium was shockingly low.  The fighters are not the only ones who do not show up.  We are not getting the new Arts people.  We are not getting the new Service people.  We are not getting the experienced Arts and Service people.  We are getting a very small insular group of mostly Peers who have hung out with each other for years.

So the questions I have to ask is “Where is everyone else?”

What are we not doing?  Are our classes directed at the right audience?  Are we advertising to the right people?  Are we holding them in the right places?  How do we get these answers?

I would much rather concentrate on new people and the Arts and Services crowd. Fighters get their practice at the various fighter practices that are held regularly.   Arts and Service people only have Collegium.  I think that that group is much more important to reach than the fighters.

I am home and I am very tired.  the weekend is a series of impressions right now so I am not sure how coheirent I am.

First, congratulations to Leotulf and Gillian.  Believe me when I say that I could not ask for better heirs.  After all Leotulf and I share a birthday.  That alone would make him special but his Lady rocks also.  I am very happy.

Teh cooks play date was fabulous.  Everyone was having such a good time!  Whoo-hoo for the cooks of the Principality.

The list was a joy to watch.  I enjoyed the fighting.

The Roses was wonderful.  The non-fighters and the children had a ton of fun giving roses people.  I lovved this when Kamila did it and I am very glad I did it as well.  I am really hoping that this becomes a regular part of Roses.

The rapier tourney was ald wonderful.  How come jsut when you want to sit and watch something other matters become important?  I had to consult with the Hearlds for Court.  But I was able to sit and enjoy the finals.

It was a very small crowd on Saturday evening but it was a fun small crowd.

This morning the Saint and I combined hot water and coffee grounds so that both of us got coffee.  Cooperation is a wonderful thing.  Coffee is also a wonderful thing.  :-)

The Wimsical History Pas was just plain fun.  Thank you, John, Janos and Etaine.  I hope this is something we can do again sometime.

Thank you to everyone who came. Thank you to everyone who worked.  It was a great day.

(Oh yes, I was able to give one of my favorite people an award she never expected to have.  Being Princess is good)

Everyone says

  • Sep. 7th, 2009 at 8:08 AM

I have been thinking about the phrase “everyone says” and it occurs to me that this is a basic part of our worlds. We like it when we are in agreement with our friends. It is not as comfortable when we disagree. I am not talking about the small disagreements. I am talking about the fundamental disagreements such as politics or religion. I know that I have trouble understanding why another person cannot see what I can clearly see. It is puzzling.

So, as I see it, the problem with everyone is that it really is not everyone. It is just those people we talk to or those electronic sites we look at. Others have totally different views that we never get to hear because we do not listen to them.

The biggest problem with “everyone” is that it can influence others. Like “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth”. The more they talked and the louder they talked the more people began to think that what they were saying was true. Say something over and over and it becomes true. Swift Boat Veterans was a masterful campaign and from that point I can admire it but it was cruel and untrue. It turned a war hero into a whiney liar.

So yes, I have been thinking a lot about “Everyone says”. My personal solution is to go and ask what was said or done. My personal solution is to try to find all sides to an issue. My personal solution is to remember that often there is no right or wrong, just differences in how we view the world. I refuse to follow something or someone just because “everyone says” so.

Sewing and more sewing. Plus vacuuming. The floor is a disaster. Little bits of fabric. Strings. Piles of fabric bits everywhere. But the cats are happy. they have stuff to play with.

This weekend should see me caught up. I will be at the war for a while and then off to Kara's for more sewing. Sunday will be more sewing with good friends. I am towards the end of season 3 of Babylon 5.

My DVR did not record my show last night. Now i have to figure out why.

It looks like a beautiful day.

I always liked her best

Your result for The Six Wives of Henry VIII Test...

Anne Of Cleaves

Dutiful, Quiet, Educated, Subdued, Content.

"God Send Me Well To Keep"

Anne of Cleaves was Henry's fourth wife. She was chosen for a few reasons- one, Henry had been alone for two years following the death of Jane Seymour, and had but one legitimate heir to the throne- the son Jane had died giving birth to, Prince Edward. Henry Had two daughters- Mary, by first wife Katharine of Aragon, and Elizabeth, by second wife Anne Boleyn. His lust for Anne had caused Henry to declare Mary a bastard and strip her of her sovereign inheritance; his wrath toward Anne only a few years later had caused him to do the same to their daughter, Elizabeth, shortly after having Anne beheaded. Thus, neither daughter was eligible to inherent the throne.

Henry was overjoyed to at last have a son, but needed another to ensure succession- his own brother, Arthur, had died at 15, changing Henry's destiny from a man of the clergy to future king.

Secondly, marriages were means of political gain, and Henry could forge an alliance with another country by taking a princess. In henry's case, he needed to gain Protestant alliance throughout Europe- his divorce and subsequent marriage of Katharine and Anne, respectively, had caused him to break from the Holy See and form the Protestant church.

Henry would have trouble getting a fourth wife- his reputation was not favorable. He had driven Katharine to her death, the beheading of Anne was sudden and considered to be too harsh a punishment, and even his loving marriage with Jane Seymour was suspect- the gossip was that he desired an heir so greatly he'd had the baby ripped from her womb in a butchered c-section. This was completely false, and most knew it, but it showed the attitude toward Henry's ever changing tastes in women.

No princess would have him. As Cristina of Milan (who was also the great-niece of Katharine of Aragon) put it, "I would gladly marry the king, had I two necks, but I have just the one, and would rather keep it."

Anne was 24, German, and had no english skills. She was shown by way of the painting here, and the king took an interest in her. Unfortunately, upon seeing her, Henry was disappointed- she was badly complected due to childhood smallpox, sallow, ill-shaped, lacked intellect and musical talent, and was not flirtatious- all things the king was quite attracted to. In fact, Henry was repulsed by her, and unable to consumate the union.

In addition, he no longer needed the German alliance, and had come under the enchantment of Catharine Howard, destined to be wife number five.

In contrast with Anne of Cleve's dull, shy, solemn disposition, Catharine was lively, flirtatious, and thirty years younger than he. Citing Anne of Cleves' previous engagement, which was never fulfilled, but never dispensed, he had the marriage anulled. Unlike Katharine, Anne did not fight. It's unclear if it was because she spoke very little english and had no idea what was happening, or because she was so naive.

Having been raised in a strict Protestant castle, she was not taught languages, music, reading, or dancing, like other European princesses, so it should surprise no one that she did not know there was something wrong in the fact that Henry wasn't having sex with her. Her strict Protestant beliefs meant sex was a topic that would never be discussed, so Anne Of Cleves' mother never told her what to expect on her wedding night. (When asked by her ladies in waiting what her marital night had been like, Anne said he held her hand, slept soundly, and was kind to her. Her ladies in waiting were surprised and asked if there hadn't been anything else- and Anne simply looked at them in confusion and asked, "What else is there?")

It's also possible that Anne simply remembered the fate of the last two women to arouse Henry's anger; whatever the reason, Anne agreed to the kings terms. She was granted a wealthy settlement that made her one of the wealthiest women in England, kept her place at court (often referred to as the king's sister), and maintained her relationship with Princesses Mary and Elizabeth.

Anne of Cleves died in 1557, at the age of 41. Thanks to her willingness to split amicably from Henry, she died extremely wealthy, and was quite content.

Your Word is "Think"

You see life as an amazing mix of possibilities, ideas, and fascinations.

And sometimes you feel like you don't have enough time to take it all in.

You love learning. Whether you're in school or not, you're probably immersed in several subjects right now.

When you're not learning, you're busy reflecting. You think a lot about the people you know and the things you've experienced.

I recently re-worked my song mix on my Ipod.  i decided it did not have enough variety.  I went through my small CD collection and decided the best way to get variety was to put Woodstock on my Ipod.  Now, this has been very successful except for one small problem.  For some reason the tracks  end with the introduction to the next song.  It is very weird to listen to Janis Joplin introduce her song and end up with Tom Petty instead.

Right now I have Santana which is making me very happy.

Projects

  • Jan. 6th, 2009 at 9:03 PM

It is not that I did not enjoy working and finishing the projects that I did in the last couple of months but it is nice to be able pick up where I left off.

Knitting is still one of the top projects on my list.  I need to finish the current pair of socks and look for the next project.  [info]moira_ramsay gave me some more patterns and I need to see which one I want to try.

My mantle is still waiting to be finished so I got it out this evening. I found all the thread and the pattern.  It felt good to work on it.

Spinning is also going well.  It is another project that I have studiously been avoiding for the last couple of months.  It feels good to get back to it.

I want to paint both bedrooms.  I have been thinking about this since I moved in .  This year I serously want to do it.  I even know what colors to use.
